Kitchen and Housewares Reviews of Orange-X 5.5-Inch Mortar & Pestle, RedCustomer Review: Use every day Summary: 5 Stars
This has become one of our most used products in the kitchen. Fresh crushed pepper tastes much better than from the shaker. My wife uses it for all kinds of whole spices and even to crush garlic. Clean up is easy but you must dry and put a thin layer of oil over surface each time.
Description of Orange-X 5.5-Inch Mortar & Pestle, RedOrange X 5.5 Inch Mortar & Pestle-Red This attractive and durable mortar and pestle is ideal for grinding almost any herb or spice, from rosemary to anise to chiles (perfect for a piquant red mole). The mortar features a coarse surface for grinding, and is 5-1-/2 inches in diameter with 4/14-inch tall sides, while the pestle is 7 inches long. Both are constructed of powder-coated cast iron, which provides stability and strength, and the mortar has a convenient spout on one side and a nonskid base. The pestle?s ergonomically designed Santoprene handle is strong enough to deal with the toughest herbs, but soft enough that it won?t wear out your hands. This combo should last a lifetime--but you do have to treat them with proper care. Before the first usage (and after each subsequent usage) wash the set with a mild dishwashing liquid, rinse with warm water, and dry with a soft cloth or paper towel. Then spread a thin coat of oil over the cast-iron surfaces of both the mortar and the pestle (vegetable oil is recommended, but be sure not to use a salted fat, such as margarine, and don?t season in the oven). Never allow the mortar and pestle to drip dry or wash in dishwasher, and be sure to season all of the exposed surfaces right after they?ve been washed and dried. This will not only prevent foods from sticking but will also prevent rust. --A.J. Rathbun
